Manual Lymphatic Drainage, MLD, is a therapy that supports the lymphatic system, helping to rid the body more efficiently of toxins and excess fluid and reduce swelling. During MLD, your therapist uses manual light touch to move excess lymph and fluid out of the tissues and back into the lymphatic vessels. Although often referred to as a type of massage, MLD is very different from traditional forms of massage that rely on deep and rigorous rubbing. MLD is much gentler. Lymphatic drainage is very gentle, is not painful and doesn’t have a stimulating effect. Each session lasts from 45 to 60 minutes. One study showed that the greatest reduction in swelling from lymphedema occurs in the first week of treatment and stabilizes during the second week.

Q&A

Q: Is the lymphatic drainage suitable for someone with chronic pain issues?

A: Absolutely! Lymphatic drainage is really gentle, and many with chronic pain find it soothing. Just let your therapist know about your pain issues beforehand, and they can adjust the treatment to make it as comfortable as possible for you. It’s a nice, low-impact way to help relieve some tension and encourage healing.

Q: Can I gift this experience to someone who has never done lymphatic drainage before?

A: For sure! This MLD experience is perfect for beginners. The therapists are super friendly and explain everything, so no worries if they’re new to it. Plus, the gentle approach makes it easy for anyone to try. Just let them know it’s their first time, and they can customize accordingly.

Q: What should I wear to the lymphatic drainage session?

A: Wear something comfy! You’ll be lying down for the duration, so loose-fitting clothes are best. Some people prefer to wear just a robe, which they provide, but you can keep your clothes on if that makes you more comfortable. Just avoid anything too tight because you want to be relaxed.

Just had the best lymphatic drainage experience in Oahu!

I just got back from my session at Hawaii Natural Therapy, and it was a game changer! The whole place is so beautifully decorated, and the atmosphere was super calming. I wasn’t sure what to expect since I’ve never done lymphatic drainage before, but the therapist explained everything and made the whole experience really soothing. They even served water and grapes at the end, which was a nice touch! Worth every second.

Thinking of gifting the lymphatic drainage session. Any thoughts?

I’m considering gifting the 90-minute lymphatic drainage session to my sister who’s been feeling stressed and bloated lately. Has anyone done this? Does it really help with stress and swelling? She hasn’t tried anything like this before. Just want to make sure it’s a good pick!
