Departing from downtown Anchorage, the Coastal Classic Train travels south along the rugged coastline of Turnagain Arm, with dramatic views of the Chugach Mountains plunging directly to the sea. At the end of Turnagain Arm, the tracks veer away from the road system into the backcountry wilderness – and what many consider to be the most scenic stretch of the Alaska Railroad, accessible only by train. Watch for views of massive glaciers, steep river canyons, and cascading waterfalls. The train arrives to Seward at 1115 am, allowing plenty of time to explore this charming port town – or opt to take a marine wildlife & glacier day cruise into the nearby Kenai Fjords – before departing on the return journey at 6 pm that evening, arriving back to Anchorage by 10:15 pm.

Q&A

Q: What's the best way to dress for the train ride? Is it cold on the train?

A: It's a good idea to dress in layers. The train itself is comfortable, but it can get chilly, especially when you're near the windows. I recommend wearing a light jacket and bringing a scarf. Also, don't forget your sunglasses for those stunning views of the glaciers!

Q: Are there age restrictions for kids on this trip? Thinking of taking my 6-year-old.

A: No age restrictions that I'm aware of! I took my 8-year-old last summer and they loved it. Just make sure they can sit still for a few hours. The views will keep them entertained!

Q: What happens if the weather's bad? Can we reschedule?

A: Yes, you can reschedule! Just contact the Alaska Railroad customer service as soon as you know. They’re pretty flexible with weather-related cancellations, especially since conditions can change quickly in Alaska.

Just returned from the Alaska Railroad trip to Seward - WOW!

I just did the round-trip train ride from Anchorage to Seward and it was incredible! The views along Turnagain Arm are breathtaking. We saw glaciers, mountains, and even a few waterfalls. I highly recommend getting the wildlife cruise option in Seward – it was worth every penny! The train was super comfy too, and the guide shared so many cool facts about the area.

Considering the Alaska Railroad trip for a gift, thoughts?

I’m thinking of buying this train experience for my parents’ anniversary. They love nature and haven't been to Alaska yet. The itinerary looks great, but are there any hidden costs I should be aware of? Also, how's the seating? Are the views good from everywhere?
