During a government shutdown, Badlands and Mount Rushmore remains open and accessible to the public, but all services provided by the National Park Service (NPS) are suspended. The extent of the impact can vary based on the specifics of the shutdown, but past incidents provide a clear precedent for what to expect. Concessionaire operations: Third-party vendors who operate facilities like restaurants and gift shops (e.g., Xanterra) may remain open and provide limited services, including restrooms. These are privately-run services and are not affected by the government shutdown. State funding: During previous shutdowns, the state of South Dakota and private donors stepped in to provide funding to keep the memorial open and restore some services. In a 2023 budget standoff, South Dakota officials secured a deal with the NPS to keep some areas open.

Q&A

Q: Is there an age limit for kids on this van tour?

A: No specific age limit, but it’s best suited for kids 5 and up, as the tour can last a few hours. They should be able to sit in the van for that time. Parents often bring snacks and some toys for the little ones. Just be sure to check with the provider if you have very young kids!

Q: What happens if the weather is bad on the day of the tour?

A: They usually check the weather before the tour. If it looks unsafe, they’ll reschedule you for another day, no extra fees. Just give them a call if you’re worried the day before or the morning of your tour. They’re pretty flexible!

Q: What should we wear for the van tour? Is it cold in the Badlands?

A: Layers are key! Mornings can be chilly, but it warms up during the day. Bring a light jacket and wear comfy shoes since there may be some short walks. Also, don’t forget sunscreen! Even if it’s cloudy, those rays can be strong.

Thinking of gifting the Badlands Van Tour—any insights?

I'm considering getting the Badlands Premium Hard Top Van Tour for my parents. They love nature and haven't been to South Dakota yet. The picnic lunch sounds great, but I'm curious about the guide's knowledge. Are they engaging? Also, any tips for making it even better? Thanks!

Just finished the Badlands Van Tour—what an experience!

I took the Badlands Premium Hard Top Van Tour last week and wow, it was incredible! Our guide was super knowledgeable and the views were breathtaking. We had a picnic lunch out in the landscape, which made for some epic photos. Highly recommend it for anyone! Anyone else done this?
