Discover a world of marine science and one of the best snorkeling spots in the Hilo region at these two family-friendly beach parks, accessed from the shoreline. The only black-sand beach in the Hilo region provides relaxed swimming, sheltered rock pools for beautiful snorkeling and excellent surfing. Lava from Mauna Kea has formed a natural seawall at Richardson Ocean Park, making it a sheltered beach that is perfect snorkeling with giant sea turtles, monk seals and abundant sea life. Rock pools that fill at high tide make for shallow, detached swimming holes at low tide. Snorkel in the pools, without the stress of swell or currents.

Q&A

Q: Is there an age limit for this snorkeling experience? My kids are 8 and 10.

A: There’s no strict age limit for the snorkeling experience! Kids as young as 5 can participate, but they must be accompanied by an adult. My kids loved it, and the guides are super helpful with younger ones. Just make sure they’re comfortable in the water!

Q: What do I need to wear for snorkeling? Is it cold in the water?

A: Definitely wear a swimsuit! The water is usually warm, around 75-80°F, but a rash guard can help with sunburn. Water shoes are a good idea if you plan to walk on the black sand. You’ll get all the snorkeling gear included, so just bring your towel and sunscreen!

Q: How's the parking situation at Richardson Ocean Park? Is it hard to find a spot?

A: Parking can get a bit busy, especially on weekends. There’s a lot right near the beach, but it’s wise to arrive early. The guides usually tell you what time to show up, and it's well worth it. If you can't find a spot, you can always try the adjacent parks, just a short walk away.

Just booked the Beach Snorkel experience, any tips?

I’m super excited! I just booked the Beach Snorkel - Sea Turtle and Black Sand Lagoon experience for my family next month. We’ve never snorkeled before, so hoping to see some turtles and the beautiful rock pools at Richardson Ocean Park! Any tips on what to bring or expect?

Anyone done the snorkel tour? What’s the best time to go?

I’m considering this experience as a gift for my boyfriend’s birthday. Has anyone done it? What time is best to avoid crowds? Also, how's the visibility usually in the water?
