Q&A

Q: Can you do this tour if you're not a good driver? How difficult are the roads?

A: The roads inside Volcanoes National Park are pretty well-maintained, but they can be winding and narrow in some areas. If you're comfortable with driving in scenic areas, you should be fine! Just take it slow, especially if you're stopping at different points. The audio guide really helps you plan your stops, so you can take your time and enjoy the views.

Q: Is there an age limit for this tour? Can kids join?

A: There's no age limit for the tour! Kids can definitely join, and it’s a great way to teach them about geology and Hawaiian culture. Just make sure to have some snacks and maybe take breaks at the viewpoints to keep them engaged. The hikes can be a bit challenging for younger kids, but the drive itself is pretty accessible.

Q: What should we wear for this driving tour? Is there a lot of walking?

A: Definitely dress in layers! The weather can change quickly in the park, so it's best to be prepared. Comfortable shoes are a must since you’ll probably want to hop out and walk the lava fields or trails. I wore hiking sandals, which worked well, but sneakers are fine too! Just be ready for some uneven terrain if you venture off the road.

Just did the Hawaii Volcanoes driving tour, and it was amazing!

I just got back from the self-guided driving tour in Volcanoes National Park, and WOW! The audio narration was fantastic; it added so much to the experience. We explored the Kīlauea Iki Trail and the petroglyphs. The views from the Jaggar Museum overlook were breathtaking! We spent about 5 hours total, but you can really take your time. This is a perfect gift for any nature lover. Highly recommend!

Thinking about getting this tour as a gift, any tips?

I’m considering this driving tour for my partner’s birthday. He loves hiking and geology. Is it really flexible? Like, can we just stop whenever we want? I want to make sure it’s a nice relaxing day, not too rushed. Any advice?
