If you're looking for a day or half-day adventure that will take you off the beaten path of NYC, Governors Island is a great choice. Known mostly to locals, the island has only been open to the public since 2003, and not yet on the tourist radar. It contains two historic forts and a massive, new public park. It's rich with American and New York history, and has served as a military base since the year 1800. In the 21st century the island has been ingeniously reimagined as an innovative public space. It is home to many arts, education, cultural and environmental non-profits who are finding new and exciting ways to use the space. The island is just 172 acres total, with a 2-mile (3.2 km) perimeter, so it's bite-sized. It's many lawns and shade trees beckon you to enjoy a picnic lunch, and the kids will love it. And, as there are no cars allowed, it's the perfect place to enjoy a bike ride.

Q&A

Q: Is there an age limit for the biking tour on Governors Island?

A: There's no strict age limit, but kids should be able to comfortably ride a bike. They usually recommend that participants be around 8 years old or older for safety. Just keep in mind that it's a two-mile, fairly easy ride, so younger kids who can ride well will enjoy it! Also, don't forget to bring water for them!

Q: What should we wear for the biking tour?

A: I'd recommend wearing comfortable athletic clothes since it can get warm, especially if you're biking for a while. Don't forget sturdy shoes, and maybe bring a light jacket in case it gets windy. Sunglasses and sunscreen are also a must since there's not a ton of shade on the ride!

Q: What if it rains on the day of our tour?

A: If the weather's bad, like heavy rain, they usually reschedule or offer a refund. It's best to check in with them on the day of the tour. Plus, biking in light rain can be fun, but you'll want to dress appropriately. Just be cautious on wet paths!
