There are very few places in the world where you can experience the stars in the sky and illuminated water around you at the same time. Our trip starts off with a beautiful sunset paddle in Griffin Bay off of San Juan Island where we kayak among harbor seals, roosting birds, and other wildlife. Then as the night progresses, the environment around us becomes even more serene as the bioluminescent sea life comes to life. This is one of those experiences that you will truly remember forever. Please contact Outdoor Odysseys directly to complete your waivers prior to the tour.

Q&A

Q: What happens if the weather is bad on the day of the tour?

A: If the weather isn’t cooperating, Outdoor Odysseys will usually reschedule the tour for you. They want to make sure you get the best experience possible! Just make sure to check your email or call them directly beforehand to confirm any changes. It’s good to be flexible since bioluminescence is best viewed in clear conditions.

Q: What should I wear for the kayak tour? Is it cold at night?

A: You’ll want to dress in layers! It can get pretty chilly once the sun sets, so a warm jacket and maybe a hat are good ideas. They provide all the kayaking gear, but definitely wear shoes that can get wet. You’ll be on the water, after all! Also, don’t forget sunscreen; it’s easy to forget even when it’s not super sunny.

Q: Is this tour suitable for kids? What’s the age limit?

A: Yes, this tour is great for kids! They recommend ages 8 and up, but it really depends on your child's comfort level with kayaking. Just make sure to let them know in advance if you're bringing kids, so they can prepare appropriately. Kids love the bioluminescence – it’s like magic!

Just went on the bioluminescent kayak tour and WOW!

I did the bioluminescence kayak tour last week in the San Juan Islands and it was unreal! We started with this gorgeous sunset over Griffin Bay and then right as it got dark, the water started glowing. I was literally gasping. The seals were super cute too! If you’re considering this as a gift for someone, do it. Just remember to dress warm; it gets chilly out on the water at night!

Thinking about gifting the kayak tour – need advice!

I'm looking to get my partner a fun outdoor experience and stumbled upon the bioluminescence kayak tour in San Juan Islands. Has anyone done it? What was the experience like? Also, how’s the parking situation there? Just want to make sure it’s smooth sailing from start to finish for the gift!
