Carmel by the Sea is a story of unmatchable beauty and history that can be explored on this self-guided audio drive. This one of a kind village of less than 5,000 was founded by writers, poets, artists and musicians over 100 years ago. It was that artist colony vibe, along with the beauty of the ocean, that brought multi-media producer Bob Hamilton here from LA and New York over 40 years ago. Over those years, he proudly took visiting friends to all the hidden story locations that the average tourist may never see.  Now, the VoiceMap app lets him take you on your own private trip through the town with over a hundred art galleries, wine tasting rooms, high-end restaurants and shops and then to the beaches and around the point, ending at the 230-year-old Carmel Mission. From start to finish the tour takes less than an hour, but you travel at your own pace. The tour is ready whenever you are and the audio plays automatically at exactly the right time and place using your smartphone's GPS and the VoiceMap mobile app, which also works offline.

Q&A

Q: Is this driving tour suitable for families with kids?

A: Absolutely! The tour is flexible and can be enjoyed at your own pace. Kids will love hearing the stories and exploring the beautiful scenery of Carmel. Plus, since it’s self-guided, you can stop whenever you want for snacks or playtime at the beach. Just keep in mind that some of the art galleries may not be super entertaining for younger kids.

Q: Can this tour be done on a rainy day?

A: Yes, but keep in mind that while the audio tour will work, the outdoor sights might be less enjoyable in the rain. If it's just light rain, you can always stop in some of the local shops or galleries. Also, the VoiceMap app has offline access, so it’s perfect for those unpredictable weather days. Just don’t forget to bring an umbrella!

Q: How long does the tour take if you want to stop and explore?

A: The tour itself takes about an hour if you keep moving, but you can easily stretch it to a few hours or all day depending on how many stops you want to make! There are so many cool galleries, restaurants, and beaches to explore. I recommend setting aside at least 3-4 hours if you want to really enjoy everything.

Thinking of gifting the Carmel audio tour, is it worth it?

Hey everyone! I’m considering gifting the Carmel by the Sea self-guided audio tour to my parents. They love exploring small towns and history. Has anyone tried it? How informative is the audio? I heard it covers some hidden gems that typical tourists miss. Just want to make sure it's a good choice for them!

Anyone recommend the best time of year for the tour?

I’m planning a trip to Carmel and want to do the audio tour. I’ve heard mixed things about the weather. When’s the best time to do this? I’m hoping for clear skies but not a ton of tourists. Any tips?
