This lively overview of Chicago architecture explores iconic buildings from the 1890s to present. We'll compare and contrast a wide range of buildings with varying architectural styles and see how older structures connect to new skyline additions. On this tour, we'll make seven stops in downtown Chicago where we can compare the histories and styles of buildings located within sight of each other. The tour features 19th-Century Commercial, Beaux-Arts, Mid-Century Modern and Postmodern buildings, as well as the latest in architecture from Frank Gehry, Renzo Piano and Adrian Smith. At each stop, we’ll look at the connections between the past and present and discover what inspires design today. The tour culminates with a visit to Millennium Park, where world-class art and architecture combine, creating a unique urban fabric. As a certified nonprofit, all CAC ticket purchases directly support our education efforts and community engagement projects.

Q&A

Q: Is this walking tour suitable for kids? I'm considering it for a family gift.

A: Yes, this walking tour can definitely be suitable for kids! It’s engaging and the sights are quite fascinating, so children usually enjoy it. Just be mindful that some parts may involve a fair bit of walking, so it might depend on their comfort level. I took my 10-year-old and she loved seeing the different architectural styles!

Q: What happens if it rains? Do we get rescheduled or refunded?

A: Good question! If it rains, the tours typically continue unless there are severe weather conditions. They might provide rain ponchos or suggest bringing an umbrella. If it gets canceled, you usually get a chance to reschedule, which is a nice perk!

Q: How difficult is the walking tour? I'm not super fit.

A: The tour is relatively easy and designed for everyone! There are breaks at each stop, and the pace is chill. It’s about 2-3 miles in total, so as long as you're comfortable walking a bit, you should be fine. Plus, it’s not a marathon, just enjoy the sights!
