Locking through the dam is a great break from the ordinary. You wait as the massive gates to the lock open, and the boats heading upstream slowly motor out of the lock. We then kayak into the lock and secure our spots as the gates close behind us. We take note of the high water mark that is slightly below the decks of the kayaks and watch them grow as the water slowly drains into the river below. Once we lower 45 to 60 feet and reach river level the even larger rounded doors open in front of us and release us into the river to continue on the rest of the tour.

Q&A

Q: Is there an age limit for the Kayak Tour at Chickamauga Dam?

A: There's no strict age limit, but kids should be at least 8 years old to join in the fun. They’ll need to be able to paddle and sit in the kayak for a while, so keep that in mind. It’s a really family-friendly experience, and everyone usually has a blast, but you’ll want to make sure the kids are comfortable on the water.

Q: What's the best way to prepare for the kayaking tour? What should I wear?

A: Definitely wear quick-dry clothes and bring a water bottle! You'll want shoes that can get wet since you might step in the water a bit. Sunscreen and a hat are good ideas too, especially during the summer. The guides will provide life jackets, so just focus on being comfortable and staying hydrated!

Q: What happens if it rains on the day of the tour? Is it still on?

A: If it's just light rain, the tour usually goes on as planned since kayaking in a little rain can still be fun! However, if there are severe weather warnings or heavy storms, they might reschedule it for safety reasons. It's always a good idea to check in with the guides a day before your tour to know what to expect.

Thinking about gifting the Chickamauga Dam Kayak Tour—any thoughts?

I’m trying to decide if this kayak tour would be a good gift for my friend who loves outdoor adventures. I know it’s a unique experience, especially with going through the dam! But, is it more suited for experienced kayakers, or can beginners handle it too? Also, any tips on making the day extra special?
