This tour is strenuous due to climbing/hiking uphill in elevation, unimproved trails and off-trail hiking. It is designed for the more fit travelers. While still a narrated tour, the interpretive hike covers more ground, and explores the sub-alpine and alpine tundra as well as glacial topology in depth. The extra time on the ground gives the group a chance to see the forested area near the Nenana river, the brushy but wildlife rich sub-alpine tundra, and the gorgeous views and highly adapted vegetation of the taiga. Expect to cover 4-6 miles and climb up 1500-1800' in elevation. *Note, this tour often operates in areas just outside the National Park so we may explore the mountains off-trail and utilize locations that are more remote and have a wider variety of terrain to explore. We can drop you off at the train depot in time for the 12:30pm train departure.

Q&A

Q: What kind of fitness level is required for this hiking adventure?

A: You definitely need to be in decent shape for this hike! It’s pretty strenuous, so if you’re comfortable with climbing and can handle uneven trails, you’ll be fine. Expect to hike around 4-6 miles with an elevation gain of about 1500-1800 feet. If you're unsure, maybe practice a few local hikes before you go.

Q: Is there an age limit for this hike?

A: There isn't a strict age limit, but it’s really geared more towards adults or older teens who are fit. Kids might struggle with the strenuous parts of the hike. It’s always best to check with the provider if you’ve got a specific age group in mind.

Q: What should I wear for the hike? Is it weather dependent?

A: Definitely dress in layers! The weather can change quickly up in Denali, so you want to be prepared for anything. Sturdy hiking boots are a must, and I’d recommend moisture-wicking clothes. They provide rain gear and overboots, but you might want to bring your own just in case!

Thinking of gifting the Denali Hiking Adventure - any thoughts?

Hey everyone! I’m considering giving my brother the Denali 4 Hour Hiking Adventure with a naturalist guide for his birthday. He’s super into hiking and nature. I just want to make sure it’s a good choice. Has anyone done this hike? What was the view like? I know it’s pretty strenuous, but I think he can handle it. Any tips?
