3 Hour Paddle We begin our 3 hour paddle of the West Thumb Geyser basin at 8:30 AM. We will traverse 3 miles of wilderness with the opportunity to view active geyser features along the way. Paddling along the shoreline allows for the best wildlife viewing opportunities. Elk are often spotted in Grant Village and sometimes other mammals such as bears and wolves frequent the lake area. A variety of bird species are spotted daily and the water is clear enough to see the native Cutthroat Trout as big as your arm if you're lucky enough. ;) The fish can get quite large in Yellowstone Lake.

Q&A

Q: Is there an age limit for this kayak tour? Can kids join?

A: Yes, kids can join the kayak tour, but they need to be at least 8 years old to paddle. If they're younger, they can still come along but must ride with an adult in tandem kayaks. It's a great family activity and we saw lots of wildlife, so kids will love it!

Q: What should we wear for the kayak tour? Is it cold in the morning?

A: Definitely wear layers! Mornings can be chilly, especially by the water, but you’ll warm up while paddling. A good fleece or a lightweight jacket works great. Also, don’t forget a hat and sunscreen—time slips by when you’re having fun out there!

Q: What if the weather is bad? Do they cancel the tour?

A: If the weather is too severe, they will reschedule or offer a refund. It’s always best to check in with them the day before. Light rain is usually okay, but they prioritize safety!

Just did the Early Morning Guided Kayak Tour and WOW!

I just got back from the kayak tour at Yellowstone and it was amazing! We started at 8:30 AM and paddled around the West Thumb Geyser basin. Seeing the geysers up close was unreal. And we even spotted some elk grazing near the shore! Highly recommend it for anyone wanting to see wildlife and get a workout—just be ready for a bit of a chilly start.

Thinking about gifting the kayak tour—anyone done it?

I’m considering giving this kayak tour as a gift for my boyfriend's birthday. I read it’s about 3 hours long and you can see wildlife. What’s the vibe? Is it worth it? Anyone have tips for first-timers?
