Q&A
A: Definitely wear sturdy hiking shoes, and long pants are a good idea because it can be very muddy, especially on the Halema’uma’u Trail. Layering is key since it can get chilly in the early morning. I'd also recommend bringing a light rain jacket just in case! You'll want to be comfortable since some parts can be steep.
A: The hike is suitable for ages 10 and up, but kids need to be accompanied by an adult. They should be able to handle a moderate trail since there are some tricky parts on the Halema’uma’u Trail. It’s a great way for older kids to learn about volcanoes and see the aftermath of the eruption firsthand!
A: If the weather is unsafe, the hike can be rescheduled without any penalties. Just reach out to Kapohokine Adventures as soon as you know. They'll work with you to find a new date. It's always best to check the forecast before heading out, though!

Just did the Elite Volcano Hike and it was AMAZING!
I went on the Elite Volcano Hike from Hilo last weekend and wow, it was so worth it! The views of the caldera were breathtaking, especially at the Kilauea Iki Overlook. Our guide was super knowledgeable about the 2018 eruption, and we even got to see some steam vents at Sulphur Banks. The deli-style lunch was really good, too! Highly recommend this for anyone visiting the Big Island.
Considering the Elite Volcano Hike as a gift!
I'm thinking of gifting the Elite Volcano Hike to my brother who's really into hiking and nature. Has anyone done this? Is it a good experience for someone who loves adventure? I want him to have an unforgettable day since he doesn't get out much.
