Want to check out Portland's hot thrift shop scene? You just have to know where to go! Come along with me for a tour of shops that include everything from items plucked out of the dump to high-end Prada at a second hand boutique! Portland's thrifting culture is rooted in our respect for the environment and a commitment to re-use and recycle useable goods rather than send them to the landfill. Consequently, we have many thrift shops of every kind and category! There's no place better to begin than SE Hawthorne Ave., a vibrant street of secondhand shops, as well as a food carts, coffee shops, and small businesses selling made-in-portland goods. It's my treat for coffee or cocktails as we meet to get acquainted and caffeinated! This is a team experience so we can share what we're looking for and act as scouts for each other (me: Frye boots, color brown, size 10). I look forward to going thrifting with you in Portland!

Q&A

Q: Is there a specific age limit for the thrift shop tour?

A: There’s no strict age limit for the thrift shop tour! It's definitely suitable for teens and adults. Just keep in mind that younger kids might not have as much fun browsing through old clothes and knick-knacks. If you're bringing someone who’s younger, maybe check with the guide first on their experience level.

Q: What should I wear for the thrift tour? Is it casual?

A: Totally casual! Just wear something comfy since you'll be doing a bit of walking. I’d suggest layers, especially if you’re going in the fall or spring when the weather can change. And maybe wear shoes that are easy to slip on and off since some thrift shops might have those rules!

Q: What if the weather's bad on the day of the tour? Do they reschedule?

A: If the weather's really awful, like heavy rain or snow, they usually reschedule to a later date. Just make sure to check in advance with the guide. They’re super flexible and will work with you to find a time that fits after the cancellation!

Thinking about gifting the thrift shop tour in Portland!

I’m thinking of giving this thrift shop tour as a gift for my sister's birthday. She loves thrifting and I think she’d have a blast checking out all the cool shops in Portland! I love that the guide provides coffee during the meet-up. Anyone done it before? How was the experience?

Just did the thrift tour, and it was amazing!

I went on the thrift shop tour last week and it was such a fun experience! Our guide was super knowledgeable about the shops and even gave us tips on what to look for. We had the best time at this cute little shop with vintage jackets. Plus, the coffee was a nice touch! Highly recommend it if you're in Portland.
