This 2-3 hour guided walking tour around Madison Square Park seeks out what's left to be found of the Gilded Age city. On this tour we read the architecture and decode the street walls in a neighborhood that was once the New York's city center at the height of the Gilded Age.  Where the city came from (Soho), and where it moved to (Times Square, Museum Mile, and the shops of Fifth Avenue) is integral to understanding how New York, and Madison Square, developed. You’ll learn answers to questions you didn’t know you had about New York City, and leave with the deeply satisfying sense of understanding a city that author James Baldwin called 'spitefully incoherent'.

Q&A

Q: Are there any age restrictions for this walking tour?

A: There are no specific age restrictions for the Explore the Ruins tour. It's family-friendly, but younger kids might get bored with the walking and history. I'd say it’s best suited for ages 10 and up. Just keep in mind that some of the information can be a bit advanced for younger audiences!

Q: What should we wear for the tour? Comfortable shoes?

A: Definitely wear comfortable shoes! You’ll be walking around Madison Square Park and the surrounding areas for a couple of hours. There’s some uneven pavement and all that, so a good pair of sneakers will make a big difference. Dress in layers too — it can get warm, but you might want a light jacket if it’s breezy.

Q: What happens if it rains? Do they cancel the tour?

A: If it rains, the tour usually goes on unless there’s severe weather. They suggest checking the forecast and bringing an umbrella if there’s light rain. Just call them if you're uncertain, and they'll keep you posted on any cancellations!

Thinking about gifting the Explore the Ruins tour!

Hey! I’m considering this walking tour of Manhattan as a gift for my history-loving friend. The idea of exploring the remnants of the Gilded Age sounds amazing, especially around Madison Square Park. Does anyone have tips on whether it’s worth it? How engaging is the guide? I want to make sure it’s special!

Just got back from the walking tour, wow!

I did the Explore the Ruins tour last weekend and it was incredible. Our guide knew so much about the history of NYC! I especially loved learning about the Gilded Age buildings that still stand. It felt like walking through a living museum. Highly recommend for anyone who loves history!
