Grand Prismatic Hot Spring is a must-see on everyone’s trip to Yellowstone National Park. Yellowstone’s largest hot spring is best viewed from above, giving you the vantagepoint to see the entire spring with a panoramic view. After viewing Grand Prismatic, we hike through the endless pines of the 1988 burn to Fairy Falls. Dropping 200 feet over the edge of the cliff, Fairy Falls is a sight to see! Then, we head to Imperial Geyser for a taste of solitude. Watch the geyser erupt while taking in the colorful waters that surround it. This is the best time to see Grand Prismatic, Fairy Falls, and Imperial Geyser; before the massive crowds clog the parking area.

Q&A

Q: What should I wear for the hike, especially given the weather can change quickly in Yellowstone?

A: Definitely dress in layers! The mornings can be chilly, especially by Grand Prismatic, so a light jacket is great. Sturdy hiking shoes are a must since the trail can get rocky. I’d recommend moisture-wicking clothes too, just in case it gets warm later. Also, don’t forget a hat and sunscreen – you’ll be exposed to the sun quite a bit!

Q: Are there any age restrictions for the hike? I want to take my kids.

A: There aren't strict age restrictions, but it’s best for kids who are at least 8 or 9 years old. The hike can be a bit strenuous, especially the section to Fairy Falls, but it’s rewarding! Just make sure they can handle some uphill and rocky paths. It’s a great experience for families who enjoy nature!

Q: Is there a good place to park at the start of the hike? I've heard Yellowstone can be crowded.

A: Parking can get tricky, especially during peak season. I recommend arriving early – like, before the sunrise early! The trailhead for Grand Prismatic usually has spots available early in the day. The guides will also help you find the best parking when you arrive for your hike. Just be prepared for some walking from the parking area to the trailhead.

Considering the Fairy Falls and Grand Prismatic Hike as a birthday gift!

Hey everyone! I’m thinking about gifting this hike to my sister for her birthday. She loves the outdoors and I’ve heard the views from Grand Prismatic are unreal. It’s also nice that there’s food included since she’s a bit of a snack fiend! Just wondering if anyone has done this and can share their experience? Any tips for making it extra special?

Just got back from the Grand Prismatic hike—AMAZING!

I just did the Fairy Falls and Grand Prismatic hike last weekend and wow, it exceeded my expectations! The view from the overlook was just stunning, and Fairy Falls is a must-see. Plus, the lunch they provide is actually really good. The sandwiches were fresh! Pro tip: hydrate before and after; the altitude can sneak up on you. Can’t wait to do it again!
