Weave through the different periods of Reno's boom and bust on this self-guided audio tour of the downtown area. Reno, with its highs as a glitzy desert town filled with cowboys and celebrities, to its lows as a washed-up gambling town and the butt of many jokes on late night TV, has never failed to keep America fascinated. It’s a contradictory place that rides high and dips low. And, as it turns out, that oscillation was built into the city’s character from the beginning. This walking tour starts at Reno’s Arch, and along the way you'll find out about: A beloved 12-floor brick building that was demolished. An extinct species of huge fish that used to swim through downtown Reno. Reno’s history as the divorce capital of America. How trains, highways and mining changed the city. The bridge where the whole town started. This self-guided audio tour can be enjoyed on location or even virtually at home with VoiceMap's Continuous Play function which disables the GPS playback.

Q&A

Q: Is there an age limit for this audio tour? I want to take my kids!

A: There’s no formal age limit for the audio tour. It’s designed to be family-friendly, so kids should enjoy it, especially if they like exploring and learning! Just keep in mind that some historical topics might be more suited for older kids. Bring some snacks, and you’ll have fun walking around together!

Q: What should I wear for this tour? Is it casual or more upscale?

A: Casual is definitely the way to go! Wear comfortable shoes since you'll be walking around downtown Reno quite a bit. I suggest layering, too, since the weather can change. A hat and sunscreen are good if it’s sunny!

Q: Can this tour be rescheduled if the weather is bad?

A: Since this is a self-guided audio tour, you don't have to worry about rescheduling! You can choose to do it anytime, even if the weather isn’t great. Just keep in mind that some parts might be less enjoyable if it’s pouring, but you can do the tour at your own pace.

Thinking of gifting the Reno Audio Tour, any feedback?

I’m considering this audio tour for my dad’s birthday. He loves history and it’s free, which is a plus! Has anyone done it? What’s the best way to enjoy it? Should we do it in one go or take breaks?

Just did the Reno self-guided audio tour – sooo cool!

I can't believe how much I learned about Reno! Starting at the Arch was perfect, and the stories about the old divorce capital and extinct fish were wild. I walked along the Truckee River and took tons of pics. If you're in Reno, this tour is a must-do!
