Discover Harlem, one of Manhattan’s most iconic neighborhoods, on a Spanish tour that reveals its history, culture and enormous influence on New York art. We begin the tour of the West Side Highway appreciating the Intrepid aircraft carrier, the Trump Buildings and the Hudson River. We will visit the exteriors of the legendary Cotton Club, scene of great jazz and blues figures, and then the legendary Apollo Theater, where artists such as Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin and the Jackson Five debuted. We will continue to Columbia University and walk through the picturesque Harlem homes to get an up-close look at its historical evolution, including the famous Mother Hale home. Then we will visit the tomb of General Ulysses S. Grant before entering a Baptist temple to live an authentic gospel Mass with its traditional chants. We will finish the tour at 59th Street in Midtown Manhattan.

Q&A

Q: Is there an age limit for the Harlem and Gospel Mass Tour?

A: There's no official age limit, but I’d recommend it for ages 10 and up since younger kids may not appreciate the history as much. It's a great cultural experience for teens! Just keep in mind that the gospel service can get lively, so kids who might get antsy could affect the mood for others.

Q: What’s the best way to get to the starting point of the tour?

A: The starting point is usually at a central location in Midtown, so the subway is your best bet! Take the 1, A, or C train to 59th Street, and it's a short walk from there. You can also park nearby, but keep in mind that parking can be a bit pricey and hard to find during weekends.

Q: If it rains, do they cancel the gospel mass part of the tour?

A: No worries about rain! The gospel mass is held indoors at the church. Just make sure to wear comfortable shoes since you'll be doing some walking outside during the tour. If the weather’s really bad, they might adjust the itinerary, but the mass itself should go on.

Considering the Harlem and Gospel Mass Tour for my parents’ anniversary!

I wanna get my folks something unique for their 30th anniversary, and I came across this Harlem and Gospel Mass Tour. They love jazz and history! I think the Cotton Club and Apollo Theater stops would blow their minds. But I’m worried about the length of the tour. Anyone know how long it generally lasts or if it's boring for older folks?
