The coastal hike will take you from Sharp Park through the coastline of Pacifica where you will get to experience Whale sightings, see California goldfields and poppies (wildflowers native to California), Black sand beaches, and watch surfers catch waves. As we hike from Sharp Park Beach to Pacifica State Beach near Linda Mar you'll likely see fishermen standing on the beaches hoping to catch striped bass or salmon, and if you look into the sky you may see paragliders floating above Musell Rock Park in the distance. The trails are beginner-friendly so feel free to bring the whole family along.

Q&A

Q: Is there a specific age limit for kids on this hike?

A: The hike is pretty beginner-friendly, so kids of all ages can join! Just make sure they can walk a few miles and be aware that some areas can be uneven. It’s a great way for the whole family to enjoy nature together, plus the views are amazing!

Q: What should we wear for the hike? Any tips on footwear?

A: Wear comfortable hiking shoes or sturdy sneakers, as the trails can be sandy and a little rocky in places. Dress in layers since it can get windy along the coast. Don’t forget a hat and sunscreen for those sunny patches!

Q: What’s the best time to go for whale sightings?

A: The best time for whale sightings along the Pacifica coast is usually between December and April. You'll have a good chance to see gray whales during their migration. But even outside those months, you might spot sea lions or dolphins!

Just did the Pacifica hike and it was epic!

I took my family on the hike from Sharp Park to Pacifica State Beach last weekend, and it was such a great experience! The views of the coastline are stunning, and we even spotted a couple of whales! The black sand beaches were really unique, and my kids loved playing in the sand while we took a break. The binoculars for whale watching were a nice touch! Highly recommend if you’re in San Francisco.

Thinking of gifting the Pacifica hike, any thoughts?

I'm considering this hike as a gift for my parents. They love nature but aren’t super experienced hikers. Do you think they'll enjoy it? I read it’s beginner-friendly! Also, what's the likelihood of seeing whales? I want it to be a memorable experience!
