Check out one of DC's most unique features, less than a mile away from the National Mall, in the historic Shaw neighborhood, near the Convention Center. The Alleyways of DC served a distinct purpose as a city planning feature, but they also provided a hidden safe space where escaped enslaved people and the poor could find inexpensive housing and live their lives away from prying eyes. While city officials condemned life in the alleyways as dangerous, dirty and diseased, they were in fact a place where communities sustained each other and provided security. Tour is 1.5 hours with a halfway stop at La Colombe Coffee.

Q&A

Q: Is there an age limit for kids on this walking tour? I'm thinking of getting this for my 10-year-old.

A: There's no specific age limit for the walking tour, but it's generally recommended for ages 12 and up due to the content discussed. However, younger kids can join if they're able to walk for 1.5 hours and can follow along. Just keep in mind that some of the historical topics might be heavy.

Q: What happens if it rains? Is there a reschedule policy?

A: They do run the tours rain or shine, but if the weather is really bad, they will likely reschedule. If you book this as a gift, make sure to check their policy for rescheduling after purchase. Keep an eye on the forecast as your tour date approaches!

Q: What should I wear for this walking tour? Any tips?

A: Comfort is key! Wear comfy shoes since it’s about 1.5 hours of walking. Dress for the weather—layers are a great idea if it’s cooler in the morning. And since it's in the Shaw neighborhood, you might wanna wear something casual but nice; lots of cool spots nearby to check out afterward!
