We are the only kayak rental company right next to the Kitty Hawk Woods Coastal Preserve. This paddling area is hands down one of the best family ecotours experiences to be had on the islands of the OBX. A beginner friendly environment explores a calm, glassy creek that meanders through the natural glory of one of North Carolina’s largest track of deciduous maritime forest habitat. We have a flotilla of sit in and sit on top kayaks for your paddling pleasure. We also have specialty fishing kayaks and sea kayaks for the Hard Core paddler.

Q&A

Q: Are there any age limits for the kayak rentals?

A: Great question! Kids as young as 5 can kayak with an adult, and they typically have tandem kayaks available for families. Just make sure everyone is comfortable in the water and wearing a life jacket. It's a chill, beginner-friendly environment, so your little ones should have a blast!

Q: What should we wear for kayaking in the Outer Banks?

A: I'd recommend wearing quick-dry clothing and definitely some water shoes or sandals. Sunscreen is a must too, since you'll be out in the sun for a while. If it's sunny, maybe a hat or sunglasses would be good as well. The water can get chilly, so a light jacket wouldn’t hurt if you’re going early in the morning!

Q: What happens if the weather turns bad during our rental?

A: If the weather looks sketchy, it's best to call ahead. They monitor conditions closely, and if it’s unsafe, you can usually reschedule without extra fees. Just keep an eye on local forecasts. Safety is their priority!

Thinking about gifting a kayak rental for my family's Outer Banks trip!

Hey everyone! So, I'm looking to surprise my family with a kayak rental while we're in the Outer Banks. I heard Kitty Hawk Kayak & Surf School is the real deal, especially for beginners. I want to make sure we have a fun and safe time. Is it as laid-back as they say? Any tips for first-timers?

Anyone recently done a kayak rental at Kitty Hawk?

I’m considering this for my boyfriend’s birthday next month. He loves nature and I think paddling through the Kitty Hawk Woods would be a blast! Does anyone have recent experiences? How’s the availability, and can we just walk in?
