Join in on the annual Wreckers Race and take part in a fast pace race toward Sand Key Lighthouse aboard Schooner America 2.0! Back in the day, pirate ships from afar often ran aground on Sand Key Reef, nine miles off the southern coast of Key West. When all the sailors in Key West heard there was booty to be had, they'd get in their boats and race each other out to the reef. The first one there could claim the ship's cargo. Today, we celebrate it with the firing of the canon to start the race, and all of the schooners of Key West are on their way in a one-way race to Sand Key Lighthouse! The boat that gets there first, "wins"!

Q&A

Q: What should I wear for the Wreckers Race? Is it super casual or should I dress up?

A: Definitely go for something casual and comfy! Think shorts, a light t-shirt, and don’t forget your sunscreen. Even though they provide some drinks, it's good to stay hydrated, so maybe bring a hat too. Just keep in mind that it can get a bit breezy out there on the water!

Q: Is there a minimum age for participants? Can kids join in on the race?

A: Kids are welcome on the Schooner, but they need to be at least 6 years old to fully participate. Make sure to keep an eye on them, though! There’s lots of excitement and movement on the boat. You might also want to check with the crew about any specific rules they have for younger guests.

Q: How does the weather affect the race? What if it rains?

A: If the weather's really bad, they might cancel or reschedule, but usually, light rain won’t stop the fun! They’ve turned the sails into a good time even in drizzle. It’s always best to check the forecast before heading out and call Classic Harbor Line if you're unsure.

Just booked the Wreckers Race on the Schooner!

I can’t believe I finally booked the Wreckers Race for next week! It sounds like a blast, racing to Sand Key Lighthouse and getting some drinks along the way. I’m really excited about the cannon firing at the start. Has anyone done this before? What was your favorite part?
