Watch the sunrise over the iconic Mesa Verde plateau in Hawkins Nature Preserve as you sip coffee at the canyon edge & learn about the history of southwest Colorado. Our walk is an easy 2-mile walk over sometimes uneven terrain. Afterward, guests can come back to explore the area on their own! Dogs are welcome, please ask before you bring Fido! As we walk through the preserve you will see & learn about the unique geology & ecology of southwest Colorado. We will stop at the canyon's edge to watch the sunrise over the La Plata mountains & Mesa Verde NP. A sunrise hike isn't complete without a treat, so I will make sure to bring your choice of coffee, tea or hot chocolate & a locally baked goodie! After the sun rises we will continue our walk through pinyon-juniper woodlands, stopping along the path to learn about various flora & fauna. We will also stop at a 1,000+-year-old ruin and discuss the lives & culture of the people that built Mesa Verde.

Q&A

Q: What's the age limit for kids on the Mesa Verde Sunrise Tours?

A: There isn’t a strict age limit, but I’d recommend it for kids 8 and up who can handle a 2-mile walk. The terrain can be a bit uneven, so younger kids might struggle a bit. Just make sure they’re dressed appropriately for the weather and can stay focused during the history discussions at the stops!

Q: Is it possible to reschedule if the weather is bad?

A: Yes, rescheduling is totally possible. If the weather looks like it might not cooperate, just reach out to Cortez Tours, and they’ll help find a new date for you. They prioritize safety and want everyone to enjoy the experience without any worries!

Q: What should we wear for the hike? Is it chilly in the morning?

A: Layering is key! Mornings can be chilly, especially since you're at the canyon edge. I'd recommend wearing a light jacket or a hoodie that you can take off once the sun comes up. Hiking boots or comfortable shoes are a must for the uneven terrain too!

Thinking about gifting the Mesa Verde Sunrise Tour!

I'm considering getting the Mesa Verde Sunrise Tour for my partner's birthday. The idea of sipping coffee at the canyon edge while watching the sunrise sounds amazing! Just wondering if anyone has done it and if it’s worth the price? I know they provide locally baked goodies, which is a nice touch! Any tips?

Just came back from the Sunrise Tour, and wow!

I just got back from the Mesa Verde Sunrise Tour, and it did NOT disappoint! Watching the sun rise over the La Plata mountains while learning about the history of the area was so enriching. The guide was super knowledgeable, and the hot chocolate was the cherry on top. Highly recommend this for anyone looking to really enjoy nature!
