Maui is the place to see humpback whales. Each year these magnificent creatures migrate south from Alaska, and although you can see them throughout Hawaii, the ‘Au ‘au channel off the coast of Maui boasts the greatest number. Our warm, relatively shallow and protected waters make an ideal location for the humpbacks to mate and give birth to their calves. These whales are known for their acrobatics, and are often seen fully breaching out of the ocean!

Q&A

Q: Is there a best time of year to go whale watching in Maui?

A: The best time to go whale watching in Maui is typically between December and April. During these months, humpback whales are most active as they migrate south from Alaska to mate and give birth. If you're planning a trip, try to book closer to January or February for the best chance to see them breaching! Also, weekends can get crowded, so consider a weekday trip.

Q: What's the age limit for kids on this whale watch tour?

A: Kids of all ages can join the whale watch tour! Sail Maui is family-friendly and welcomes younger children. However, it’s a good idea to bring life jackets for little ones if you have them, just to be safe. They also provide snacks and drinks, so it's great for keeping kids happy during the trip!

Q: What should we wear for the whale watching trip?

A: Dress in layers! Even if it’s warm on land, the ocean can be chilly. Bring a light jacket and wear comfy shoes. Also, don’t forget sunscreen and a hat because you’ll want to protect yourself from the sun while you’re out there. It’s a good idea to have a camera or smartphone handy too for photos of the whales!

Just got back from the midday whale watch - Amazing!

I just experienced the midday whale watch at Mā’alaea Harbor and it was insane! We saw so many humpbacks breaching and the crew was super friendly. The drinks and snacks included were a nice touch, especially the local beers. I'm not sure how long the tour lasted, but it felt just right. If you’re thinking about gifting this, DO IT! My family loved it.

Considering gifting the whale watch experience, any thoughts?

I want to gift the whale watch trip for my partner's birthday. We've never done anything like this before! Is it really worth it? How’s the experience? Are there any tips for first-timers?
