Boston already has plenty of tours that focus on the American Revolution. So we created one that focuses on inventions, entrepreneurship, and social change — ways Boston changed the world, both before and after the Revolution. We’ll talk about the importance of the schools and colleges created here in the 1600s; one of the first “clinical trials” conducted in North America, which saved countless Bostonians from smallpox; one of the country’s most impressive Black inventors; the connection between an MIT startup and “The Wizard of Oz”; and women who protested and went to jail to gain voting rights. We’ll also talk about one of America’s first millionaires, whose fortune was built on ice cream and cocktails. If you want to understand what makes Boston unique, and you’re interested in STEM, entrepreneurship, or social change movements, this tour is especially for you! This is an official Innovation Trail walking tour. Next tours on: July 27, 28, 29, 31, Aug 1, 2, 8, 12, 19, 20, 22.

Q&A

Q: Are there any age limits for this walking tour? I'm thinking of getting it for my teenage niece.

A: There aren't any specific age limits for the tour. It's designed to be engaging for a wide range of ages, so your teenage niece should enjoy it! It's also great for adults, especially if they're interested in STEM and history. Just make sure she’s comfortable walking for about an hour.

Q: What should I wear for this walking tour? It's supposed to be hot this weekend.

A: I'd recommend lightweight clothing, comfy shoes, and don’t forget sunscreen! It can get pretty warm walking around Boston, especially in the summer. Bring a water bottle too, as there might not be many stops to refill during the tour.

Q: How does rescheduling work if the weather turns bad? I want to make sure my parents can go whenever they’re free.

A: If the weather is really bad, the tour can be rescheduled for a later date. Just reach out to the provider, The Innovation Trail, via their contact info about 24 hours in advance. They’re pretty flexible and want to make sure you have a great experience!

Thinking of gifting this walking tour to my mom. Any thoughts?

I’m looking for unique gift ideas for my mom, and this Hidden History and Innovation tour in Boston caught my eye. She's into social change and history, but I’m worried she might find it too much walking. Has anyone taken it? What’s the pacing like?
