Prairie in the heart of a city? You can find it in east Dallas and I'm excited to share it with you. The Blackland prairie ecosystem is a unique and diverse landscape dominated by beautiful wildflowers and grasses. It is estimated that less than 1% of this special part of nature remains statewide. It is home to countless species of plants, birds, and bugs (as well as other small critters). On this tour we will explore prairie remnants near White Rock Lake and discuss their history, ecology, and traditional uses by Native peoples. Walking/light hiking is required. Some of the grasses are tall! Please wear long pants and closed-toed shoes. Wear sun protection and bring your refillable water bottle! *please note: there is no public restroom in walking distance of this location so make sure to go beforehand! If you want in a day/time not shown on my calendar or want to book a private tour, please reach out. Also, if you have special needs in order to book please let me know.

Q&A

Q: Is there an age limit for the Plant and Prairie tour? I'm thinking of taking my kids.

A: There's no specific age limit, but since it involves light hiking and some uneven terrain, I'd recommend it for kids who are at least 7 or older. Just make sure they can handle the walking and are comfortable in the outdoors. Canaan is great with kids and makes the tour engaging for all ages!

Q: What should I wear for the tour? Is it super casual?

A: Definitely go with something casual, but keep in mind the specifics! Long pants and closed-toed shoes are a must because some plants have sharp edges or thorns. Also, don’t forget sun protection and maybe a hat since you'll be outdoors for a bit. Comfortable clothing that can handle a little dirt is best!

Q: What if it rains? Can we reschedule the tour?

A: Canaan is super flexible with weather-related issues! If it looks like rain, just reach out to him directly to reschedule. He wants everyone to enjoy the tour and stay safe. Usually, he offers alternate dates if there’s a chance of rain leading up to the tour.

Just did the Plant and Prairie tour and it was amazing!

I went on the Plant and Prairie tour last weekend near White Rock Lake and wow! Canaan was so knowledgeable and made it fun. The wildflowers were in bloom and it felt surreal to experience that in the city. I took my sister, and we both learned a ton about the local ecosystem. Just remember to wear long pants, the grasses can be super tall! I highly recommend it if you're looking for a unique gift.

Considering the Plant and Prairie tour as a gift for my nature-loving friend!

I’m thinking of gifting the Plant and Prairie tour to my friend who’s super into plants and nature. I’ve read good things about it, and the fact that it’s free is a bonus! Does anyone know if it’s suitable for someone who's slightly older? I want it to be fun for them!
