On this walking tour, we’ll explore the city’s significant role in the Underground Railroad and the individuals who helped shape its fight for freedom. The tour is self guided on our walking tour app. It's hands free, plays as you walk and you can go at your own pace, anytime, it never expires. You’ll walk through historic streets where ordinary citizens took extraordinary risks to assist those escaping slavery. We’ll visit former homes, churches, and workplaces that served as safe havens and meeting places for abolitionists, reformers, and community leaders. Each stop demonstrates how Portland’s waterfront and neighborhoods became centers of courage, compassion, and quiet resistance. Let’s start our journey at the Mariner’s Church Banquet Center, a landmark that saw both Portland’s growth and its dedication to justice.

Q&A

Q: Is there an age limit for this tour? Can younger kids participate?

A: There’s no strict age limit for the tour, so younger kids can definitely join! Just keep in mind that the narration might be more suited for older kids, but it's not too heavy. Consider bringing headphones for them if you think the storytelling might be a bit much. It's a great way for families to explore Portland's history together!

Q: What if the weather is bad? Can we reschedule?

A: Since this is a self-guided tour, you can choose to go whenever it works for you! If it’s raining or too cold, just wait for a better day. The tour never expires, so no worries about losing your purchase. Just check the forecast and enjoy at your pace!

Q: What should we wear? Are there any recommendations?

A: Comfort is key! Wear good walking shoes since you'll be on your feet a lot. Layers are smart too, especially in Portland where it can be chilly in the morning and warm up later. A light waterproof jacket is a good idea, just in case! You’ll want to enjoy the experience without being uncomfortable.

Just finished the Portland Underground Railroad walking tour – wow!

I finally did the self-guided tour last weekend and it was incredible! Starting at Mariner’s Church was perfect, and the stories kept me hooked. I walked through some beautiful neighborhoods and learned so much about the abolitionists in Portland. For anyone considering this, definitely do it! Plus, I went at my own pace and could stop for photos whenever I wanted.
