The best part about walking out into the wilderness is the feeling you get when you realize you are not racing the sun to be back to the car before dark. It's a sense of being liberated from life's daily trappings. You will not be able to check your email, post to Instagram, or be stuck in traffic. To spend 36 hours in the Mojave Desert is an intimate experience in the changing of light and the rhythm of desert life. Depending on what you and I decide, we might opt for continuous motion, wherein we start in one location and hike until it's time to set up camp, or we can do it basecamp style where we pick a location and spend all of our time bouncing back and forth between camp and whatever peak, canyon, or rock feature your eyes and ambition are drawn to. This used to be a 24hr trip but at the end of every trip everyone has always wanted it to keep on going.

Q&A

Q: What's the best time of year to do this adventure in Joshua Tree?

A: The ideal time would be from late fall to early spring (November to March). The temperatures are much cooler, making hiking more enjoyable. In the summer, it can get extremely hot, and you wouldn't want to be caught out there. Just be prepared for chilly nights even in winter!

Q: Are there age limits for kids on this adventure?

A: There's no strict age limit, but younger kids might find the hiking challenging. It's best suited for kids who are accustomed to outdoor activities and can handle moderate hiking. If they love nature, they’ll have a great time, but maybe check with the provider if you’re unsure.

Q: What should I wear for the 36-hour adventure? Any tips?

A: Dress in layers! Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, then add insulating layers, and a waterproof shell for rain. Don’t forget a hat and sturdy hiking boots! Also, bring extra socks; dry feet make a big difference.

Thinking of gifting the 36-hour adventure in Joshua Tree! Any advice?

I’m considering this experience for my partner's birthday. We both love hiking and the outdoors. The idea of being out there for 36 hours sounds amazing! Just wondering how intense the hiking is? We're moderately fit but don’t want to be exhausted the whole time. Anyone done this before?

Just came back from the Joshua Tree adventure – wow!

I gifted this experience to my brother last month, and it was incredible! We hiked to some amazing rock formations and totally felt off the grid. The meals were great (seriously the freeze-dried stuff surprised me). Just be ready for some chilly nights! Worth every penny!
