The French brought the opera to New Orleans in the early 1800’s. This sophisticated music flourished here long before New York or any other city in North America. The free people of color introduced the harmony and spirituality of Sunday church music and the bordellos of Storyville led to music greats Buddy Bolden, Louis Armstrong and King Oliver. This evolved into the only true American music that was born in the gentlemen parlors of Treme and was called JAZZ.

Q&A

Q: Is there an age limit for this backstage music tour in New Orleans?

A: There isn’t a strict age limit, but I’d recommend it for teens and adults who can appreciate the music and history. Kids under 12 might not get much out of it, but you can definitely bring them if you think they’ll enjoy the experience. Just check with the provider for any specific restrictions before booking.

Q: What happens if it rains on the day of the tour?

A: If it rains, they usually go ahead with the tour as much as possible, but depending on the severity, they might modify the route or provide ponchos. Just check the forecast and be prepared for the New Orleans humidity! It’s also a good idea to confirm with Nola Detours the day before.

Q: What should I wear for the backstage tour?

A: Definitely wear something comfortable since you'll be walking around New Orleans for a bit. I’d recommend breathable clothes, especially in summer, and comfy shoes. If you have any jazz-themed attire, even better! Just be ready to enjoy some spontaneous music too!

Thinking about gifting the Private Backstage Music Tour - any advice?

I’m considering this backstage music tour in New Orleans for my dad’s birthday. He’s a huge jazz fan and loves Louis Armstrong. The meet-and-greet sounds amazing! Just curious if anyone has done it before and what it’s like. Is it worth the price? Also, how long does the tour usually last? Thanks!

Just did the Private Backstage Music Tour and WOW!

I went on the Private Backstage Music Tour last week and I can’t recommend it enough! The vibe in the French Quarter was perfect and the guide was super knowledgeable. Meeting the musicians was the highlight for sure. It completed my New Orleans trip. Seriously, if you’re on the fence about this as a gift, go for it!
