Q&A
A: Great question! The tour is suitable for all ages, but kids under 12 should be accompanied by an adult. Just be mindful that the forts may have uneven surfaces, so keeping a close eye on little ones is a good idea. Also, they might find the history a bit dry, but the boat ride is always a hit!
A: If the weather looks nasty, the tour will be canceled for safety reasons. They usually notify you the day before or the morning of. You can reschedule for another day without any extra fees if you can’t make it due to bad weather. Just keep an eye on emails!
A: Yes! There’s parking at the docks where the boat departs, but it can fill up quickly, especially on weekends. I’d recommend arriving a bit early to snag a spot. If that’s full, there are nearby paid lots that usually have availability.

Just did the Private Island Fort Tour—what an experience!
I went on the Private Island Fort Tour last weekend and it was amazing! The boat ride was so chill and the views of the lighthouses were stunning. Fort Scammel is super interesting, especially knowing it saw actual combat. We even got a drink included! Definitely a unique way to spend a Saturday afternoon in Portland.
Trying to decide if this is the right gift—thoughts?
I’m considering the Private Island Fort Tour for my husband’s birthday. He loves history and being outdoors, but I’m worried he might find it a bit boring. Anyone who’s done it think he’ll enjoy it? Also, is it easy to bring snacks or drinks along?
