This private tour picks you up from your hotel in Williamsburg, Virginia to visit Berkeley Plantation. Berkeley’s 1726 Georgian mansion is the birthplace of Benjamin Harrison V, signer of the Declaration of Independence, and also the birthplace of William Henry Harrison, 9th president of the United States, and his grandson, Benjamin Harrison, the 23rd president. During the Civil War, Berkeley was occupied by General McClellan’s troops. While at Berkeley, General Butterfield composed the familiar tune “Taps”, played by his bugler. We will explore the Native American, Colonial and Civil War artifacts, along with historical paintings and exhibits in the 18th century basement museum. The tour offers a close look at the site's architecture and surroundings, giving a clear picture of life in that era. The kitchen dependency and reconstructed slave quarters tell the story of the enslaved workers at Berkeley. Grounds include five terraces leading to the banks of the James River.

Q&A

Q: Is there an age limit for kids on this private tour?

A: There's no strict age limit for kids, but I’d say it depends on their interest in history. I've taken my 10-year-old, and he loved the artifacts and learning about the Civil War. Just be prepared to walk a bit, so little ones might need a stroller if they're not up for it. The guides are really great with kids too!

Q: What should we wear for the tour? Is it outdoorsy?

A: I’d recommend wearing comfortable shoes since there’s a fair bit of walking on the grounds. Also, check the weather—if it's sunny, bring a hat and sunscreen! The tour includes both indoor and outdoor areas, so layers can be a good idea too, especially in spring or fall.

Q: What happens if the weather's bad? Can we reschedule?

A: If the weather is bad, the tour company is super flexible. They usually allow you to reschedule without any extra fees, which is a relief. Just make sure to call or email them ahead of time to confirm your new date. It’s nice to know they care about your experience!

Thinking about a private tour from Williamsburg to Berkeley Plantation!

I’m looking at this private tour for my parents’ anniversary. They love history, and I think the birthplace of Benjamin Harrison will excite them! I saw it includes snacks and water, which is a plus for a long day. Anyone done this? How was the guide? I want it to be special for them.

Just booked the Berkeley Plantation tour—any tips?

I just booked this private tour for next weekend! Super excited to see the plantation and learn about its history. I read it includes a museum under the main house. Any tips on what to check out there? Or things not to miss?
