Every year, humpback whales travel up to 3,000 miles from their polar feeding grounds to their warm tropical breeding grounds here in Hawai’i! While the whales are in Hawai’i we get to see a variety of breeding related behaviors! Have you ever seen a 30 ton whale breach completely out of the water? It’s an unbelievable sight to see! We can also see behaviors like tail or pec slapping, spy hopping (yes, they can look at you!) and even heat runs (males competing to mate with a female)! We meet at the harbor at 7:30 am and get back to the dock around 12:30 pm. Because it is a private tour, we can split up the time whale watching and snorkeling whichever way you like. Generally we spend a few hours watching whales and when the sun comes out, and it’s a little warmer, we can go snorkeling!

Q&A

Q: Is there an age limit for kids on the whale watch tour?

A: There’s no strict age limit for the whale watch and snorkel tour, but it’s recommended for kids aged 5 and up. Younger kids may find it a bit long if they get restless. Just be sure to bring along some snacks and toys to keep them entertained!

Q: What should we wear for the snorkeling part? Is it cold in the water?

A: For snorkeling, wear a swimsuit and maybe a rash guard for sun protection. The water temperature is usually warm, around 75°F, so it shouldn’t be too chilly unless it's windy. Definitely bring a towel for after the swim!

Q: What if the weather doesn't cooperate? Can we reschedule?

A: Yes, you can reschedule if the weather looks bad. Just give them a call, and they’re usually pretty flexible about finding a new date. It’s always better to wait for a clear day for the best experience!

Thinking of gifting the Private Whale Watch off Kauai! Opinions?

I’m considering getting this experience for my parents’ anniversary. They love the ocean and have never seen whales up close! I’m curious how the snorkeling is and if it’s really a good value for the price. Anyone done this? What can we expect?

Private Whale Watch and Snorkel - Worth it?

So I’ve got this on my bucket list! I’m wondering if the snorkeling is really good here or just an add-on. Also, if I get seasick easily, should I take anything? Any tips would help!
