This tour is designed for active and adventurous cruise passengers who are looking for an Alaskan excursion that is off the beaten path and away from the crowds. We’ll depart Icy Strait Point and drive through the Alaska Native Tlingit village of Hoonah before merging onto old logging roads that will take us to a remote river for fishing (spin or fly fishing available). During the car ride and along the river it is common to spot wildlife- the island has more brown bears per square mile than almost anywhere else on the planet!

Q&A

Q: Are there any age restrictions for the river fishing and bear watching tour?

A: There are no strict age limits, but it's recommended for kids 10 and up due to the nature of the activities. Young kids might get bored since fishing takes patience, plus we’ll be in bear country. Just make sure they can handle a bit of outdoor adventure!

Q: What should we wear for the fishing and bear watching trip?

A: Wear layers! The weather can change quickly in Alaska. Definitely bring a waterproof jacket and good hiking boots. They provide waders for fishing but make sure you have warm socks. And don’t forget sunscreen—yes, even in Alaska!

Q: What if the weather is bad? Can we reschedule?

A: Yes, you can usually reschedule if the weather's really bad. Just check with NatVenture Tours. They’re pretty flexible, but it’s always good to give them a heads up as early as possible. Safety first!

Thinking about gifting the river fishing and bear watching tour - worth it?

I’m considering this for my boyfriend's birthday. He loves fishing and is really into wildlife. I read that we might see bears while fishing, which sounds amazing! Any tips on what to expect? How's the fishing experience itself? Thanks!

Anyone done the fishing and bear watching tour in Hoonah? Share your experience!

I just did this tour last month. It was epic! The ride through Hoonah was beautiful, and we saw a bear right along the river. Fishing was good too—caught a few salmon. Not too difficult, but be ready for a workout if you're wading in the river. Would recommend for anyone looking for adventure!
