Meet in Kailua at the Active Oahu storefront where friendly staff will help you load your kayaks and gear. From there drive a few minutes to Kailua Beach and park at the end of the first lot to launch near the bridge. A short section of water will be shallow before you continue walking across the beach to the ocean. Kayaking out to Popoia island is an easy and enjoyable experience and takes around 15 minutes to arrive at the small sandy area. For the short walk around the island be sure to bring some shoes or sandals to protect your feet from the sharp lava rock. The island is a bird sanctuary to many shearwaters that you will be able to see. When you are done exploring Kailua Bay meet us back at the storefront where we will help you unload. If you finish the route early you can relax on the beach with the included beach chairs and umbrellas.

Q&A

Q: Is there an age limit for this kayaking tour? Can kids join?

A: Yes, kids can definitely join! Active Oahu Tours usually recommends that kids be at least 8 years old to paddle their own kayak, but younger ones can ride along with an adult. Make sure to check with the staff at the storefront for any specific requirements regarding safety gear for younger kayakers.

Q: What should we wear for the kayaking, and is it okay if it rains?

A: Wear lightweight, quick-dry clothes and definitely bring a swimsuit! If it rains, they usually don’t cancel unless it's a serious storm. Just be prepared to get wet, and maybe bring a light rain jacket.

Q: How's the parking situation at Kailua Beach? Is it easy to find a spot?

A: Parking can get a bit tricky, especially on weekends. There are usually spots in the first lot, but it fills up fast. I suggest arriving early or planning for a short walk if you have to park further out. Just keep an eye on the signs for any time restrictions!

Just did the self-guided kayaking at Kailua Bay and it was amazing!

I surprised my boyfriend with the self-guided kayaking tour to Popoia Island, and we had an absolute blast! The staff at Active Oahu were super chill and helped us load everything. The short kayak to the island was easy, and we got to see so many birds! Just a heads up, wear shoes for the lava rocks, they can be sharp. We even lounged on the beach afterward with the chairs they provided. Totally worth it!

Considering gifting the kayaking experience – any thoughts?

I’m thinking of giving this kayaking experience as a gift for my sister’s birthday. She loves the ocean but has never kayaked before. Is it beginner-friendly? I want her to have a good time!
