Poipu Beach Surf School is committed to providing each of its guests with a safe, fun, friendly surfing experience. We take pride in providing top quality service, our instructors take pride and joy in introducing you to the ancient art of Hawaiian wave riding. A great activity for people of all ages. Poipu Beach Surf School teaches people how to surf at the Sheraton Beach in Poipu.  It is very safe, with only four people per instructor.  Instructors also stay with the surfers for the full lesson, never leaving them alone in the ocean. Instructors start out with a 10-15 minute land lesson at Poipu Surf (2829 Ala Kalanikaumaka St h151 Poipu, Hi. 96756), educating surfers about the surfboard, how to paddle the board, how to stand up, closing with ocean safety tips. The rest of the lesson is spent in the water catching waves.

Q&A

Q: What should we wear for the surf lesson? Is it okay to wear a swimsuit or do we need surf-specific gear?

A: You can totally wear a swimsuit! Just make sure it’s something you’re comfortable in, since you’ll be in the water a lot. Some people prefer a rash guard for added sun protection, especially in Hawaii. Also, don’t forget sunscreen! The instructors recommend it, since you can burn even on cloudy days.

Q: Is there an age limit for the surf lessons? Can kids participate?

A: The lessons are perfect for all ages! They’ve had kids as young as 8 and even older adults. Each instructor pays close attention to everyone's skill levels, so it’s a safe environment. Just check with them beforehand if you have really young kids, but generally, they’re very accommodating!

Q: What happens if the weather is bad on the day of our lesson? Can we reschedule easily?

A: If the weather looks sketchy, they’ll usually contact you a day or two prior to discuss options. If it’s really bad on the day of, you can reschedule for no extra charge! Just make sure you call them as early as possible. They’re pretty flexible with changes.

The place looks awesome, and I love that they focus on safety with only four students per instructor. Has anyone done this? How was your experience? Advice on booking surf lessons as a gift!

I want to surprise my brother with surf lessons at Poipu Beach for his graduation gift. He’s never surfed before and is pretty nervous. What do you all think? Also, how long do the lessons usually last? I want to ensure it’s a fun experience for him without being overwhelming!
