Step off the ship into creativity—enjoy a true Alaskan “Mug Up” and hand-paint your own ceramic mug. In Alaska, “Mug Up” means a coffee break for fishermen and cannery workers—now it’s your chance to enjoy a break with a creative twist and let your inner artist shine. Skip the rush of standard shore excursions and settle into a cozy studio in downtown Sitka, just a short walk from the main shuttle drop-off point. Choose a mug from a fun, unique selection and paint it with designs inspired by Alaska’s wildlife and scenery—or whatever sparks your imagination. No experience is needed: we provide glazes, brushes, stencils, and tools, along with friendly guidance if you’d like a little help. And while you create, enjoy a hot beverage and a homemade cookie. After firing in a kiln, your finished mug will be carefully packaged and mailed to you—a meaningful keepsake and a personal reminder of your time in Alaska.

Q&A

Q: Is there an age limit for the Sitka Mug Up experience?

A: There’s no strict age limit! Kids as young as 5 can definitely join, but they need an adult with them. It's a fun activity for families. Just keep an eye on little ones with the paints and supplies—we don’t want any mishaps!

Q: How does the shipping work for the mugs? Do we get them before we leave Alaska?

A: Your mug will be shipped to you after it’s fired in the kiln, which usually takes about a week. So, you won't get it while you're still in Sitka. But it’s a nice surprise to come home to! Just make sure you give them the correct address.

Q: What should I wear to the Mug Up experience? Is it messy?

A: Definitely wear something you don’t mind getting a bit of paint on—it can get messy! An apron is a good idea, but if you don’t have one, old clothes work too. The good news is they provide everything else you’ll need to create your masterpiece.

Just did the Sitka Mug Up experience, and it was amazing!

I just got back from doing the Sitka Mug Up and I can’t recommend it enough! The studio is super cozy, and the vibe was just perfect. I picked a bear-shaped mug and painted it with salmon designs. It was so fun to be creative while sipping a hot cocoa. Can't wait to see how it turns out when it’s shipped to me. Anyone else try it?

Considering gifting Sitka Mug Up for my art-loving friend!

Hey everyone! I want to surprise my friend with a Sitka Mug Up gift experience because she loves painting and Alaska. I’m just worried about how long the shipping takes and if she’ll like the mug design options. Anyone have insights?
