Discover the streets where Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, and other cutting-edge Harlem Renaissance players put American music on the world map. On Sundays, we offer a different walking tour that does not visit Striver's Row but encompasses other parts of Harlem for a shorter history walking tour and includes a visit to a local Baptist Church for a true gospel experience. And where Fidel Castro slept after being kicked out of a midtown hotel for having chickens in his room. Harlem's history is also one of the city's most dramatic, having gone through many ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic changes over the past roughly 400 years. This has resulted in a diverse array of places of worship, theaters, homes, and eating establishments. Join us uptown on our signature, award-winning two-hour Harlem walking tour.

Q&A

Q: Is there a minimum age for this tour? Can kids join?

A: Yes, there’s no strict minimum age, but kids 8 and up tend to enjoy it the most. Younger kids might get restless during the walking part. It’s a family-friendly experience, and the gospel part is pretty engaging for all ages!

Q: How does the weather affect the tour? What if it rains?

A: The tour runs rain or shine, but if the weather's really bad, they might offer a different indoor activity or reschedule. It’s always best to check the day before. Just dress appropriately for the weather, especially since you'll be walking around!

Q: What should I wear for this walking tour?

A: Comfort is key! Wear good walking shoes since you'll be on your feet for a couple of hours. Dress in layers because it can get chilly in the morning but warm up as you walk. Also, maybe a light jacket in case you go into the church!

Thinking of gifting the Soul of Harlem tour!

I’m considering this tour for my dad's birthday! He loves jazz and history. I read it includes a visit to a local church for a gospel experience, which sounds awesome! What was your experience like? How did the guides share the history? Is it engaging for someone who might not walk well?

Anyone done the Harlem Gospel experience on this tour?

Just booked this tour for next Sunday! Super excited about the gospel music part. I’ve heard it can be really powerful. Can anyone share what to expect from that experience? Is it just a performance or do we get to participate?
