See the only remaining restored Gangster Era site on this historic tour of extensive caves carved into the hillside in long-abandoned mining ventures in the 1800s. Later it was a mushroom farm, and it was then developed into a restaurant casino and gangsters' hotspot during the 1930s prohibition era. Newspapers reported an unsolved gangland murder at the casino. Tour guides point out the bullet holes. Some believe the caves are haunted by the murdered mobsters whose bodies were never found. The original bar from the 30s has been fully restored - it was a then-record at 60 feet long. Though this tour is appropriate for all ages, we recommend ages 5 and up, due to shorter attention spans and restlessness.

Q&A

Q: Is there a lot of walking involved in the St. Paul Historic Cave Tour?

A: The tour is pretty easygoing, but there are some stairs and uneven ground since it’s a cave. It’s mostly a walking tour for about an hour, so wear comfortable shoes! I took my younger sibling, and they had no issues at all.

Q: What if the weather’s bad? Will the tour still happen?

A: Yes, the caves are indoors, so the tour runs rain or shine! That’s part of the fun, honestly. Just make sure to check the schedule in case of any last-minute changes.

Q: Is this tour appropriate for kids? What's the youngest age you recommend?

A: Definitely, it's great for kids aged 5 and up! They’ll love the stories about gangsters and the spooky legend of the caves. Just keep an eye on their attention spans since it's about an hour, but everyone seemed engaged during my visit.

Just booked the St. Paul Historic Cave Tour for my family, any tips?

I’m super excited about the tour! I booked it for next week for my family - two kids (ages 6 and 9). I’ve heard the bullet holes and mob stories are really cool but I’m wondering if we need anything special to bring or wear? Also, is it a good idea to grab lunch afterward at the restaurant nearby?

Experience at St. Paul Historic Cave Tour - totally worth it!

I went on the St. Paul Historic Cave Tour last month and it was totally awesome! The guide had such a great way of telling the gangster stories, and I got chills hearing about the unsolved murder! The bar was neat too; it’s crazy to think it’s been there since the 30s. Highly recommend it!
