Californian was built from the ground up in 1984 at Spanish Landing in San Diego Bay. She was launched with great fanfare for the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles. In July 2003, the Governor signed a bill into law designating the Californian as the official tall ship of the State of California. She is the only ship to carry this prestigious title. Since her launching in San Diego the Californian has played host to thousands of adventure travelers, sailing enthusiasts, students and history buffs up and down the West coast. She has also made voyages to Hawaii, Mexico and the East coast of the United States. Californian casts a distinctive and instantly recognizable silhouette and has become one of the most well known tall ships in America. Sailing the Californian and experiencing a tall ship adventure with the Maritime Museum sail crew on San Diego Bay is a Top Thing To Do when in San Diego!

Q&A

Q: Is there an age limit for kids on the Californian tall ship adventure?

A: There’s no strict age limit for kids, but it's best suited for children ages 5 and up so they can really enjoy the experience. The crew is super friendly and makes it fun for everyone. Just keep in mind that younger kids will need supervision, especially on the deck.

Q: What happens if the weather is bad on the day we’re supposed to sail?

A: If the weather isn't safe for sailing, the Maritime Museum will usually offer a reschedule option. They keep an eye on weather conditions and will notify you if anything needs to change. Just check your email the night before, and you'll be good!

Q: What should I wear for the Tall Ship Adventure?

A: I'd recommend wearing comfortable layers, as it can get breezy out there. Closed-toe shoes are a must since the deck can be slippery. Don’t forget your sunglasses and sunscreen too, even if it’s cloudy!

So excited for our trip on the Californian!

I'm taking my family on the Tall Ship Adventure next weekend in San Diego. We’ve got general admission to the Maritime Museum included, which I hear is awesome! Can’t wait to check out the ship and learn about its history. If anyone has tips for first-timers, I’d love to hear them!

Just got back from the Californian and it was epic!

OMG, we had the best time on the Tall Ship Adventure! The crew was super friendly, and they let my daughter help with the sails. The views of San Diego Bay were insane! If you’re considering this as a gift, do it! Totally worth it!
