Experience a magical winter journey through Yellowstone National Park and the famed Lamar Valley, known as the American Serengeti. Led by guides with decades of expertise in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, you’ll encounter wintering herds of elk, bison, and bighorn sheep amid steaming hot springs and snow-covered peaks. The Lamar Valley is a prime location to spot large packs of gray wolves, along with coyotes, bald eagles, and Trumpeter Swans. Your guide will share insights into the park’s unique ecosystem, which was shaped by ancient oceans, super volcanoes, and glaciers, as well as the influences of Native American tribes and historical figures. As a highlight, enjoy a 1.5-mile (2.4-km) snowshoe or hike along the Upper Mammoth Hot Springs Terrace, exploring the stunning beauty of Canary Springs, Cupid Springs, and Orange Mound Springs. To top off your experience, you will also have the opportunity to enjoy a relaxing mineral soak at Chico Hot Springs.

Q&A

Q: Is there a minimum age for this winter wildlife safari?

A: Yes, there’s a minimum age of 12 years to participate in the safari. This experience includes a fair amount of hiking and being in potentially cold weather, so it's best suited for older kids and adults. If you're concerned about younger kids, they might not enjoy it as much due to the cold and the activity level.

Q: What should I wear for the snowshoe hike?

A: Dress in layers! You’ll want thermal base layers, a waterproof jacket, and warm gloves. Don’t forget a hat since it can get super windy up there. Good hiking boots are a must, and if you've got gaiters, wear those to keep snow out of your boots during the hike.

Q: Can we reschedule if the weather is bad?

A: Yes, Obsidian Expeditions is pretty flexible with rescheduling. If the weather conditions are unsafe, they’ll contact you and help you pick a new date. Just make sure to check their cancellation policy when booking, just in case.

Thinking of gifting the Winter Wildlife Safari - any tips?

I want to get this for my parents' anniversary. They love nature but are not super experienced hikers. Is this suitable for them? What do you think? Any tips on making it special?
