Richmond's role as the Capitol of the Confederacy during the Civil War brought more than just legislators to the city's doorstep. The many battles that occurred across the state and beyond resulted in a vast number of prisoners and wounded soldiers that needed a place to go. Many of these individuals found themselves in Richmond, particularly the Shockoe Bottom neighborhood where this tour takes place. This tour will take you to some of the notable sites in the neighborhood, and will also share with you the stories of some of the people with connections to these buildings.

Q&A

Q: Is there an age limit for the Uncivil Wards History Tour?

A: There's no strict age limit for the tour, but I’d say it's most suitable for ages 12 and up. Younger kids may find the subject matter a bit heavy. Just make sure to check if the kids can handle walking around the Shockoe Bottom area, since there can be some uneven terrain.

Q: What should I wear for the tour? Is it mostly indoors or outdoors?

A: The tour is primarily outdoors, so wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather! Richmond can get hot, so I’d suggest light clothing in summer. And don’t forget sunscreen if it’s sunny. It’s a walk through Shockoe Bottom, so you'll want to be comfy!

Q: What if the weather is bad on the day of our tour? Can we reschedule?

A: Yes, you can reschedule if the weather is bad! Just give the RVA Hidden History Storytellers a call or email them ahead of time. They’re quite flexible with rescheduling, especially for rain or extreme heat! Just keep an eye on the forecast.
