Q&A
A: The prime season for whale watching in Kauai is from December to April. During these months, humpback whales migrate to the Hawaiian waters for breeding and calving. January and February tend to be the busiest times for sightings, so if you can book during those months, you’ll have a higher chance of seeing them up close. Just make sure to check the weather too!
A: There’s no strict age limit! It’s generally family-friendly, but they do recommend that kids be at least 5 years old for safety and enjoyment. That said, younger kids can still come along if you’re comfortable. Just check with Captain J's before booking to make sure of any specific requirements.
A: Wear layers! Mornings can be chilly on the water, but it warms up as the day goes on. A light jacket or sweatshirt is a good choice, plus don't forget sunscreen and a hat because you'll be out in the sun. If you get wet, the rafts can splash a bit, so consider wearing quick-dry clothes too.

Just booked the Winter Whale Watching Adventure!
I’m so excited! I just secured spots for my family on the Winter Whale Watching Adventure with Captain J’s. We’re going in mid-January, and I’ve heard that’s a great time for sightings. I saw that they have light snacks and drinks included, which is awesome. Can’t wait to hear the whale songs with the hydrophone! Anyone have tips for first-timers?
Has anyone done the whale watching in Kauai yet?
Thinking about gifting this experience to my parents for their anniversary. They love the ocean and I know they’d appreciate the views. Is the ride bumpy? I just don’t want them to get seasick! Also, how’s parking at the launch site?
